Throat cancer is a general term that refers to a type of head and neck cancer that develops in the throat (pharynx) or the voice box (larynx). Pharyngeal and laryngeal are the two main types of throat cancer, but they can be broken up into different types depending on where in the throat the cancer originates.
The most common type of pharyngeal and laryngeal cancer is Squamous cell carcinoma, which develops in the cells that line the throat. Other types of pharyngeal and laryngeal cancer include lymphoma, lymphoepithelioma, and undifferentiated carcinoma.
Who Is at Risk?
People who smoke, use tobacco, or have human papillomavirus (HPV) are at increased risk for cancer in the throat. Other factors, such as drinking an excessive amount or consuming a diet lacking in fruits and vegetables, can also increase your risk.
