Welcome to the Strep Throat Resource Center
Unlike a sore throat, strep throat is a bacterial infection that requires prescription medication. A sore throat is often the result of a respiratory disturbance like a cold or allergies. So if your sore throat comes with the symptoms of a cold, it’s probably not strep. You can check your throat to see if there are signs of strep. In addition to swollen tonsils, your uvula will normally be swollen and there may be small red dots on the tongue or throat, white pus pockets on your tonsils, or a grey film or fuzz on your tongue. The most important thing to know about strep throat is it’s highly contagious and, if left untreated, it can lead to serious complications including scarlet fever, kidney inflammation, or rheumatic fever.
