There are two types of herpes, both of which have similar signs. The most common sign of herpes is fluid-filled blisters that burn, itch, or tingle. Herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1), also known as oral herpes, can affect the mouth, nose, and face. Herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2), also known as genital herpes, can affect the genital or anal region.
How Herpes is Transmitted
Both oral and genital herpes are highly contagious and are transmitted through direct contact with the infection. For instance, if you kiss someone who is having an active oral herpes outbreak, the infection can be passed to you. Similarly, if you have vaginal, oral, or anal sex with someone who has an active genital herpes outbreak, you could contract genital herpes.
